What is a NeuroMe lesson?

A NeuroMe lesson is a short, clear, self-guided and interactive learning experience that teaches CAPS aligned knowledge and skills in manageable steps. Lessons are accessed through Google Classroom.

The learner moves through the lesson step by step and interacts with the content throughout the learning process. The aim is not for the learner to consume as much information as possible. The aim is for the learner to understand the important content, apply it and gradually develop the skills needed to demonstrate that understanding.

NeuroMe lessons begin with one important belief

Your learner is capable.

Their communication, sensory needs, attention differences, processing speed, handwriting, movement needs or emotional regulation do not automatically determine the limits of their intelligence.

A learner may need substantial support and still have meaningful academic ability.

A non-speaking learner may understand complex information.

A learner with dyslexia may understand Natural Sciences while struggling to decode the written instructions.

A learner with dysgraphia may have an excellent answer but be unable to write it comfortably.

A learner with ADHD may understand the concept but struggle to organise the steps needed to complete the activity.

A learner recovering from burnout may still be capable of learning, but only in short, carefully regulated periods.

CAPS standards remain the foundation

NeuroMe lessons follow the CAPS topics, knowledge and skills required for the learner’s grade and subject.

Neurodivergent focused lesson design does not mean that academic standards are removed. It means that the required content is presented more clearly and accessibly.

The learner still needs to:

  1. Engage with the content.
  2. Develop the required knowledge.
  3. Practise important skills.
  4. Complete lesson activities.
  5. Apply what has been learned.
  6. Review feedback.
  7. Prepare for assessment.
  8. Demonstrate understanding.

Short lessons do not mean weak lessons.

Accessible learning does not mean meaningless learning.

Support does not mean that the learner is not expected to grow.

The purpose is to teach the essential CAPS content effectively without burying it beneath unnecessary volume, repetition or pressure.

Short and sweet, but academically meaningful

NeuroMe does not believe that the length of a lesson proves its academic value.

A learner should not need to spend hours completing repetitive work simply to create the appearance of a full school day.

NeuroMe lessons focus on the concepts and skills the learner needs to understand.

Lessons aim to:

  • Explain the required content clearly.
  • Break learning into manageable parts.
  • Reduce unnecessary repetition.
  • Avoid excessive busy work.
  • Encourage interaction.
  • Identify gaps early.
  • Support different methods of response.
  • Build confidence through achievable steps.
  • Prepare learners for later application and assessment.

The learner may complete the essential CAPS lesson and then explore the topic further if it sparks interest. A lesson about space may lead to documentaries, model building or additional reading.

A Natural Sciences lesson may lead to an experiment at home.

A History lesson may inspire a learner to investigate a particular event more deeply.

NeuroMe gives the learner the academic foundation without limiting their natural curiosity.

Predictable two week learning sections

NeuroMe follows a predictable academic structure.

The year is divided into two week sections.

Each section has one clear focus:

  1. Lessons.
  2. Practice Rounds.
  3. Knowledge Challenges.

Work is released on the Monday of the relevant section.

This structure helps the learner and parent know:

  1. What type of work is coming.
  2. When it will be released.
  3. What needs to be completed.
  4. When revision begins.
  5. When Practice Rounds will take place.
  6. When Knowledge Challenges are approaching.

Neurodivergent learners can experience significant anxiety when expectations change without warning or when academic tasks appear unpredictably.

The two week section structure reduces that uncertainty.

It also allows families to plan around the learner’s regulation, therapy, appointments, fatigue and stronger or more difficult subjects.

Two lessons per subject

During a lesson section, learners generally receive two lessons for each subject.

This allows the required CAPS content to be taught without creating a constant stream of daily work in every subject.

The parent and learner may decide when the lessons are completed within the relevant pathway expectations.

For example, the family may choose to:

  1. Complete Mathematics and Language in the morning.
  2. Complete Natural Sciences later in the day.
  3. Divide a lesson across two shorter sessions.
  4. Place difficult subjects on more regulated days.
  5. Complete preferred subjects after a demanding task.
  6. Plan lighter days around therapy or appointments.
  7. Use a weekly visual plan.
  8. Complete fewer subjects in one sitting.

The lessons provide structure.

The home environment provides flexibility in how that structure is implemented.

No compulsory daily live classes

NeuroMe lessons are self-guided.

Learners are not required to attend daily live classes at fixed times.

Live classes can create additional barriers for learners who need to:

  1. Process information slowly.
  2. Pause and reread instructions.
  3. Move while learning.
  4. Work during a different part of the day.
  5. Manage fluctuating energy.
  6. Reduce auditory input.
  7. Avoid the social pressure of being observed.
  8. Take sensory breaks.
  9. Repeat information.
  10. Work in short periods.

A live class continues even when the learner loses focus or becomes overwhelmed.

A self-guided lesson allows the learner to pause, regulate and return.

The learner can work at a time when their brain and body are more available for learning.

Clear and accessible language

NeuroMe lessons aim to use language that is familiar, clear and easy to follow. A learner should not have to decode complicated instructions before being able to engage with the actual subject.

Instructions should help the learner understand:

  1. What needs to be done.
  2. Which information is important.
  3. What kind of answer is expected.
  4. How to move to the next step.
  5. When the activity is finished.

Clear instructions can support learners who experience:

  1. Language processing differences.
  2. Working memory difficulties.
  3. Auditory processing barriers.
  4. Literal interpretation.
  5. Executive functioning difficulties.
  6. Anxiety around vague expectations.
  7. Difficulty identifying the important part of a task.

The lesson should guide the learner through the learning rather than leave them trying to work out what the lesson wants from them.

Learning is broken into manageable steps

Large tasks can activate overwhelm before learning begins. A learner may understand the content but struggle to identify where to start. NeuroMe lessons break concepts into smaller, connected steps. This process is called scaffolding. The learner builds understanding gradually rather than being expected to manage the entire concept at once.

Scaffolding helps the learner:

  1. Focus on one part at a time.
  2. See how ideas connect.
  3. Build on existing knowledge.
  4. Notice where understanding becomes uncertain.
  5. Experience completion throughout the lesson.
  6. Return to a specific part when revision is needed.
  7. Reduce the working memory burden.
  8. Feel less overwhelmed by the whole task.

The parent can also identify more easily where the learner became stuck.

Interaction throughout the lesson

NeuroMe lessons are not designed for learners to passively watch or read large amounts of content and then complete one worksheet at the end.

Interaction is woven throughout the lesson.

Depending on the grade and subject, learners may:

  1. Select an answer.
  2. Match information.
  3. Type a response.
  4. Complete a short written activity.
  5. Upload a photograph.
  6. Record a video.
  7. complete a practical activity.
  8. Apply a concept.
  9. Sort information.
  10. Explain an idea.
  11. Complete a craft.
  12. Demonstrate understanding visually.
  13. Respond using alternative communication.

This allows learning to happen step by step. It also makes it easier to identify a gap before the learner reaches the end of the lesson.

Reduced unnecessary repetition

Repetition is useful when it strengthens a skill. It becomes harmful when the learner is expected to repeat work that has already been mastered simply to remain busy.

Excessive repetition can lead to:

  1. Boredom.
  2. Frustration.
  3. Demand avoidance.
  4. Careless rushing.
  5. Loss of interest.
  6. Emotional withdrawal.
  7. Refusal.
  8. Burnout.

NeuroMe aims to use repetition intentionally. Where the learner needs practice, opportunities are provided. Where understanding has been shown, the learner is not required to complete pages of unnecessary work simply to fill time. This leaves more energy for the areas where support is genuinely needed.

Neurodiversity is considered throughout the lesson

NeuroMe’s lesson design is not based on one accommodation or one accessible font.

Neurodiversity is considered throughout the learning journey.

This includes:

  1. The predictable section structure.
  2. The absence of compulsory daily live classes.
  3. Shorter lesson experiences.
  4. Clear instructions.
  5. Manageable learning steps.
  6. Reduced unnecessary repetition.
  7. Interaction throughout the lesson.
  8. Different ways of responding.

Our lessons are designed with these considerations in mind and specific modifications for very specific individual needs happen on a home-level by parents.

Lesson-level access support

Support should not begin only when the learner reaches an assessment. The learner first needs access to the teaching.

At lesson level, families may use appropriate support such as:

  1. Audio support where available.
  2. Parent reading support.
  3. Scribing support.
  4. Typing.
  5. Speech to text.
  6. Rest breaks.
  7. Sensory regulation breaks.
  8. Movement.
  9. Reduced verbal demand.
  10. Support with planning.
  11. Support with sequencing.
  12. Alternative ways of showing understanding.
  13. Practical demonstrations.
  14. Dyslexia friendly access strategies.

The parent uses their knowledge of the learner to provide support that helps the learner access the content. The goal is not for the parent to complete the lesson on behalf of the learner.

The goal is for the learner’s own understanding to become visible.

Audio support in Grades R to 9

Where available, NeuroMe lessons in Grades R to 9 include audio support.

This may help learners who experience:

  1. Dyslexia.
  2. Slow reading.
  3. Reading fatigue.
  4. Visual tracking difficulties.
  5. Language processing barriers.
  6. Anxiety around independent reading.
  7. Difficulty decoding unfamiliar vocabulary.

Needing audio support does not mean the learner does not read at all. Audio support allows the learner to access the subject content without needing to spend all their available energy decoding the text. A learner may struggle to read a Natural Sciences lesson independently while still being completely capable of understanding the scientific concept. Audio support helps separate the reading barrier from the learner’s ability in the subject, but still requires the learner to track the words along with the audio recording.

Reading development remains important.

However, reading difficulty should not prevent the learner from accessing every other area of the curriculum.

Typing and speech to text

Some learners know exactly what they want to communicate but struggle with handwriting.

The barrier may involve:

  1. Dysgraphia.
  2. Fine motor difficulties.
  3. Slow writing speed.
  4. Handwriting fatigue.
  5. Pain.
  6. Spelling anxiety.
  7. Difficulty organising thoughts while writing.
  8. Working memory demands.

At lesson level, learners may type or use speech to text where appropriate. This allows the lesson to measure understanding more accurately. Some handwriting, crafts and practical work remain woven into lessons. This is especially important in the Foundation Phase and for learners preparing for later written assessment requirements. The goal is balance.

We do not want handwriting to block access to every subject.

We also do not want to remove all opportunities to develop written academic skills.

Rest, movement and sensory regulation

A learner may need movement in order to focus. They may need to stim, stretch, stand, walk, use a sensory tool or move to a quieter space.

They may need breaks between different parts of a lesson.

They may need to adjust:

  1. Lighting.
  2. Noise.
  3. Seating.
  4. Screen brightness.
  5. Clothing comfort.
  6. Room temperature.
  7. The number of activities completed at once.
  8. The time of day when learning happens.

These changes can be managed at home. A break does not automatically mean that the lesson has failed. A well timed break may allow the learner to regulate and return before complete shutdown occurs.

The parent knows the difference between a learner who needs encouragement and a learner whose nervous system needs time to recover.

NeuroMe provides the academic structure. The parent shapes the environment in which the learner accesses it.

Support for demand avoidance

A learner with strong demand avoidance may become distressed when a task feels controlling, inflexible or imposed without choice.

NeuroMe reduces unnecessary demand by offering:

  1. Self guided learning.
  2. No compulsory daily live classes.
  3. Choice over lesson order.
  4. Flexibility around the time of day.
  5. Clear completion points.
  6. Predictable content releases.
  7. Familiar lesson structures.
  8. Reduced unnecessary repetition.

  10. Opportunities for breaks.

Parents may offer choices within the academic expectation.

For example:

  • Would you like to begin with Mathematics or Natural Sciences?
  • Would you prefer to type the answer or explain it while I scribe?
  • Would you like to work at the desk or in the quiet room?
  • Would you like to continue now or after a break?

The learner is given appropriate autonomy without removing the purpose of the lesson.

Support for ADHD and executive functioning

A learner with ADHD may understand the content but struggle to initiate, organise and complete the work.

NeuroMe supports executive functioning through:

  1. Predictable sections.
  2. Clear lesson quantities.
  3. Manageable steps.
  4. Interactive activities.
  5. Visible completion points.
  6. Shorter learning experiences.
  7. Marking and feedback.
  8. Practice before assessment.
  9. No compulsory live timetable.
  10. Parent access to monitor progress.

The parent may still need to help the learner:

  1. Create a weekly plan.
  2. Begin the task.
  3. Remember the next step.
  4. Estimate time.
  5. Check completion.
  6. Return after a break.

NeuroMe reduces the planning burden, but it does not replace parent oversight.

Support for dyslexia

A learner with dyslexia may use:

  1. Audio support where available.
  2. Parent reading support.
  3. Typing.
  4. Speech to text.
  5. Clear visual presentation.
  6. Shorter blocks of information.
  7. Repeated access to the lesson.
  8. Focused study material.
  9. Practice before assessment.

The learner can continue developing literacy while accessing learning in other subjects.

A difficulty with decoding should not be mistaken for a lack of understanding.

Support for dysgraphia

Learners with dysgraphia or other written output barriers may use typing, speech to text or suitable lesson level scribing support.

This allows the learner to focus on communicating knowledge rather than using all available energy on handwriting.

Selected written activities remain part of the programme because written expression may still be needed in later grades and assessments.

Where formal typing or scribing is needed during assessments, the relevant accommodation process must be followed.

Support for processing speed differences

Some learners need more time to read, process, organise and respond.

A self guided lesson does not move on before the learner is ready.

The learner may:

  1. Reread the information.
  2. Pause.
  3. Take a break.
  4. Return to an earlier instruction.
  5. Think before answering.
  6. Complete the lesson in shorter parts.
  7. Ask for appropriate lesson support.

Standard NSC learners must still remain within the required academic timeline.

Open Scope learners may complete the wider journey more slowly.

Support for anxious learners

Anxiety often increases when a learner does not know:

  1. What is expected.
  2. How long a task will take.
  3. What the next step will be.
  4. Whether they are answering correctly.
  5. What the assessment will look like.

NeuroMe reduces avoidable uncertainty through:

  1. Predictable sections.
  2. Familiar lesson structures.
  3. Clear instructions.
  4. Marking and feedback.
  5. Focused study material.
  6. Two Practice Rounds.
  7. Known assessment processes.
  8. Gradual exposure to assessment expectations.

NeuroMe cannot promise that a learner will never feel anxious.

The aim is to stop adding unnecessary uncertainty to an already demanding learning experience.

Support for non-speaking and minimally speaking learners

NeuroMe does not assume that spoken language determines intelligence. A non-speaking learner may understand far more than they can communicate verbally. Where a verbal lesson activity creates an access barrier, parents should inform the Academic Leads and follow the relevant NeuroMe process.

At lesson level, the learner may show understanding through:

  1. Selecting.
  2. Pointing.
  3. Matching.
  4. Typing.
  5. AAC.
  6. Visual responses.
  7. Photographs.
  8. Videos.
  9. Practical demonstrations.
  10. Parent scribing where appropriate.
  11. Short alternative responses.

The purpose is not to excuse the learner from engaging.

The purpose is to remove a communication barrier that prevents their understanding from being seen.

Practical and concrete learning

NeuroMe is a digital learning provider, but not every learning experience happens only on a screen.

Lessons may include:

  1. Written activities.
  2. Crafts.
  3. Practical investigations.
  4. Photographs.
  5. Videos.
  6. Real objects.
  7. Experiments.
  8. Movement.
  9. Creative tasks.
  10. Applied activities.

Practical learning is especially important in the Foundation Phase and for learners who understand concepts more easily through concrete experience. Parents are responsible for providing ordinary home materials where required.

How will I know whether my learner understands?

NeuroMe lessons are marked.

Marked work and feedback help the learner and parent see:

  1. What has been understood.
  2. Which concepts need revision.
  3. Where foundational gaps remain.
  4. Whether an instruction was misunderstood.
  5. Whether careless errors are affecting marks.
  6. Whether the learner knows the content but struggles to communicate it.
  7. Whether the selected grade level is appropriate.
  8. Whether tutoring may be needed.

This means the family does not need to wait until the end of the term to discover that the learner has been struggling.

The feedback creates an opportunity for earlier intervention.

Feedback is part of the learning

A percentage tells the learner how they performed. Feedback helps the learner understand what to do next.

Families should encourage learners to review returned work rather than only checking the mark.

Feedback may show that the learner needs to:

  1. Revisit a concept.
  2. Read the question more carefully.
  3. Explain an answer in greater detail.
  4. Correct a recurring error.
  5. Review an earlier foundation.
  6. Practise a skill again.
  7. Arrange additional tutoring.
  8. Prepare differently for assessment.

NeuroMe provides marking and feedback.

The parent remains responsible for arranging individual teaching or intervention where the learner needs more support.

Lessons are part of a complete academic journey

NeuroMe does not separate lessons from assessment preparation.

The learning journey moves gradually through:

  1. CAPS aligned lessons.
  2. Marking and feedback.
  3. Focused study material.
  4. Two Practice Rounds.
  5. Knowledge Challenges.

The learner is not expected to complete lessons and then suddenly face an unfamiliar assessment without preparation.

Each stage helps build the next.

Focused study material

Before Knowledge Challenges, learners receive study material aligned to the content that will be assessed.

The study material helps the learner understand:

  1. What needs to be studied.
  2. Which concepts are important.
  3. What information should be revised.
  4. Where more practice may be needed.
  5. How the lesson content connects to the assessment.

This reduces the anxiety of being told to study an entire term without knowing where to begin.

Two Practice Rounds

Learners receive two Practice Rounds before each formal Knowledge Challenge.

Practice Rounds are mock assessments.

They allow the learner to practise:

  1. The format.
  2. The question wording.
  3. The expected answer style.
  4. Time management.
  5. The assessment environment.
  6. Recommended or approved accommodations.
  7. The Invigilator App where applicable.
  8. How marks are awarded.
  9. Which content still needs revision.

Practice Rounds do not count for marks.

Learners receive a memorandum and may review their answers.

They may repeat the Practice Rounds as needed.

Many neurodivergent learners understand the content but do not automatically know how to communicate the answer in a way that earns marks.

Practice Rounds teach both knowledge and assessment communication.

From lessons to Knowledge Challenges

Knowledge Challenge is NeuroMe’s term for formal assessment. Many neurodivergent learners have developed fear around words such as test or exam. The different language helps create a calmer association.

The name changes.

The academic standard does not.

Knowledge Challenges remain CAPS aligned assessments that help confirm whether the learner understands and can apply the work.

In Grades R to 9, the Knowledge Challenge format closely resembles the familiar lesson environment.

This reduces the shock of moving from one type of digital learning into a completely unfamiliar assessment.

In Grades 10 to 12, assessments become more formal and gradually mirror the expectations of the National Senior Certificate.

The difference between lesson support and formal accommodations

Parents may use appropriate support during ordinary lessons.

Formal assessments are different.

A learner may type during lessons but still need formal approval to type during certain assessments.

A parent may read lesson instructions but may not automatically read during a formal Knowledge Challenge.

A learner may use a scribe during ordinary learning but require an educational psychologist recommendation or SACAI approval in formal assessment.

In Grades R to 9, formal assessment accommodations should be supported by an educational psychologist recommendation or relevant existing approval.

In Grades 10 to 12, accommodations must be formally applied for and approved through SACAI before use.

This distinction protects the learner and the validity of their assessments.

The role of the parent during lessons

The parent remains the primary educator.

During lessons, the parent may:

  1. Establish the daily routine.
  2. Help the learner begin.
  3. Read instructions where appropriate.
  4. Support planning.
  5. Clarify what needs to be done.
  6. Provide appropriate scribing support.
  7. Help with speech to text.
  8. Allow sensory breaks.
  9. Prepare practical materials.
  10. Monitor completion.
  11. Review feedback.
  12. Arrange tutoring where needed.
  13. Encourage growing independence.

The parent should support access without completing the learner’s work for them.

NeuroMe is a specialised academic tool in the hands of homeschooling parents who know their learner’s needs best.

The role of the learner

According to their age and developmental capacity, learners should gradually take responsibility for:

  1. Engaging honestly with lessons.
  2. Avoiding rushing.
  3. Asking for help when needed.
  4. Completing their own responses.
  5. Reviewing feedback.
  6. Correcting misunderstandings.
  7. Preparing for Knowledge Challenges.
  8. Using only appropriate support.
  9. Building greater independence.
  10. Maintaining academic integrity.

Independence may develop slowly.

The goal is growth, not immediate perfection.

Standard NSC lesson pacing

Standard NSC learners use NeuroMe’s accessible lesson design while following the regulated academic timeline.

The learner has flexibility regarding when work is completed within the relevant section.

However, they must remain aligned with:

  1. The academic calendar.
  2. Lesson expectations.
  3. Submission dates.
  4. Practice Round sections.
  5. Knowledge Challenge timetables.
  6. SACAI requirements in Grades 10 to 12.

The daily learning environment can be flexible.

The qualification timeline remains regulated.

Open Scope lesson pacing

Open Scope learners receive the same CAPS aligned lesson design but have greater flexibility regarding completion.

An Open Scope learner may:

  1. Work more slowly than the release schedule.
  2. Take longer than one year to complete a grade.
  3. Complete subjects at different grade levels.
  4. Catch up missing foundations.
  5. Pause and return according to regulation and capacity.

The learner still completes lessons and Knowledge Challenges.

Open Scope provides flexible pacing, not the absence of meaningful learning.

What if my learner needs tutoring?

NeuroMe lessons are designed to be self guided, but not every learner will understand every concept without additional support.

Tutoring may be needed when:

  1. A learner has significant foundational gaps.
  2. The same difficulty appears repeatedly.
  3. Feedback shows that the learner is not understanding the concept.
  4. The learner requires repeated individual explanation.
  5. Specialised remediation is needed.
  6. The learner is working below the selected grade level.
  7. A difficult FET subject requires further teaching.

NeuroMe provides the structured content, marking and feedback.

Parents arrange individual tutoring or specialist intervention where needed.

What NeuroMe lessons are not

NeuroMe lessons are not:

  1. Daily live classes.
  2. Individual tutoring sessions.
  3. Therapy.
  4. Behaviour intervention.
  5. A completely individual curriculum created separately for every learner.
  6. An unstructured collection of activities.
  7. A guarantee that learning will never feel challenging.
  8. A replacement for the parent.
  9. A programme where work can be skipped without affecting progress.
  10. A lowering of CAPS standards.

They are specialised CAPS aligned lessons designed around common neurodivergent access needs.

What technology will we need?

NeuroMe is a digital learning provider.

Families need:

  1. Stable internet.
  2. Access to Google Classroom.
  3. Access to the learner’s NeuroMe email.
  4. A suitable digital device.
  5. A camera and microphone where required.
  6. Google Chrome.
  7. A PDF reader.
  8. Printer access where practical or written work requires it.

Grades using the Invigilator App require a Mac or Windows laptop with a working webcam and microphone. A phone may be useful for photographs, videos and practical evidence. Parents must ensure that the learner can access all required platforms.

What will the parent see?

The parent can monitor:

  1. The lessons released.
  2. Work completed.
  3. Marked responses.
  4. Feedback.
  5. Areas of strength.
  6. Foundational gaps.
  7. Missing work.
  8. Assessment preparation.

Parents should remain logged into or have access to the learner’s NeuroMe account.

The parent remains responsible for using this information to guide the home education journey.
