Your learner may understand the work and still find assessment difficult.

Assessment requires academic knowledge, communication, executive functioning, emotional regulation, time awareness and technological confidence to work together at the same time.
NeuroMe calls its formal assessments Knowledge Challenges.
The name is gentler.
The academic standard remains meaningful.
Knowledge Challenges are designed to assess CAPS aligned knowledge and skills while reducing avoidable uncertainty and unnecessary assessment anxiety.
What is a Knowledge Challenge?
A Knowledge Challenge is a formal NeuroMe assessment used to determine what the learner understands and can apply.
Knowledge Challenges:
- Assess CAPS aligned content and skills.
- Connect directly to the lessons and study scope.
- Require the learner to demonstrate their own knowledge.
- Contribute to academic reporting where applicable.
- Help identify strengths and remaining gaps.
- Support decisions about progression.
- Prepare learners for increasing assessment independence.
- Protect academic integrity.

A Knowledge Challenge is not simply another lesson.
The learner must complete it independently under the conditions that apply to their pathway.
Why does NeuroMe use different assessment language?
Many neurodivergent learners have developed a strong fear response to words such as test and exam.
The word itself may trigger memories of:
- Being rushed.
- Being compared with other learners.
- Being watched by an unfamiliar adult.
- Forgetting work they knew.
- Being punished for slow processing.
- Receiving a mark without helpful feedback.
- Feeling that one assessment determined their intelligence.
NeuroMe uses the term Knowledge Challenge to help create a different emotional association.
Changing the language does not change the CAPS standard.
It does not remove honest assessment.
It creates an opportunity for the learner to approach assessment as a chance to show developing knowledge rather than as a threat.
The easiest way to understand the different assessment routes
Not every NeuroMe Knowledge Challenge is the same type of formal assessment.
The learner’s pathway, grade and qualification goal determine which timelines and regulatory requirements apply.
Grades R to 9 on the Standard pathway
The learner follows NeuroMe’s issued Knowledge Challenge timetable.
Knowledge Challenges contribute to continuous assessment together with the learner’s lesson results.
Practice Rounds do not count towards the report.
The assessment is CAPS aligned and administered through NeuroMe.
From Grade 4, the learner uses the web version of the Invigilator App for internal Knowledge Challenges.
Grades 10 and 11 on the Standard NSC pathway
The learner is in the formal FET qualification phase.
Assessments become more structured and are completed according to SACAI and NSC requirements.
The learner must follow the formal timetable, submission rules, subject requirements and approved assessment conditions.
Internal FET assessments may include tasks, tests, examinations, oral activities and practical requirements, depending on the subject.
The marks are weighted according to the applicable SACAI and NSC rules.
Grade 12 on the Standard NSC pathway
Grade 12 includes formal School Based Assessment and the external National Senior Certificate examinations.
NeuroMe facilitates the learner’s internal assessment journey through SACAI.
The final external NSC examinations are not ordinary NeuroMe home based Knowledge Challenges.
They are written according to SACAI’s official timetable, venue, invigilation and examination requirements.
The final certificate is issued by Umalusi after the learner has met the national qualification requirements.
Open Scope
Open Scope learners still complete CAPS aligned Knowledge Challenges.
The difference is that the learner has greater timing flexibility.
The Knowledge Challenge is released according to the NeuroMe calendar, but the learner may complete it at a later suitable time or day according to the Open Scope process.
Knowledge Challenges remain important for:
- Reliable marks.
- Academic feedback.
- Open Scope reports.
- Grade completion.
- Progression decisions.
- Identifying whether the learner is ready for a future qualification route.
Open Scope Knowledge Challenges are not SACAI NSC examinations.
They do not become qualification assessments merely because the learner is working through Grade 10, Grade 11 or Grade 12 CAPS content.
Open Scope preparing for SACAI Grade 10
A learner may use Open Scope to build Grade 9 knowledge, assessment confidence and independence before applying for Grade 10.
Knowledge Challenge results may help the family understand the learner’s readiness.
They do not guarantee Grade 10 admission.
The learner must still meet the relevant age, academic, baseline and admission requirements.
Once the learner formally enters the Standard NSC pathway, SACAI timelines and requirements apply.
Open Scope preparing for the Amended Senior Certificate
An older Open Scope learner may use NeuroMe lessons, study material, Practice Rounds and Knowledge Challenges to build CAPS knowledge gradually.
These internal Knowledge Challenges are preparation and progress measures.
They are not the official Amended Senior Certificate examinations and do not contribute to the final adult qualification mark.
When eligible, the candidate registers through the relevant DBE process and writes the required external examinations.
The Amended Senior Certificate generally requires six subjects.
There is no School Based Assessment component.
The external examination determines the final subject result.
One assessment name, different levels of regulation

Open Scope provides flexibility
The learner may take longer and complete the Knowledge Challenge when ready according to the Open Scope process.
The Amended Senior Certificate is a later external adult examination route
NeuroMe may help the learner prepare academically, but the DBE examination process determines the final result.
Standard Grades R to 9 provide structured NeuroMe timelines
The learner follows the NeuroMe timetable and builds the habits needed for later formal qualifications.
Standard Grades 10 to 12 follow qualification rules
SACAI and NSC requirements determine the timelines, assessment conditions, weighting and administration.
Focused study material before assessment
Before Knowledge Challenges, learners receive focused study support material aligned with the assessed content.
The material helps the learner understand:
- What must be studied.
- Which concepts are important.
- Which terminology must be understood.
- Which processes or calculations must be practised.
- What type of knowledge may be assessed.
- Where further revision is needed.
- How the lessons connect to the Knowledge Challenge.
This reduces the executive functioning burden of being told to study an entire term without knowing where to begin.
The study material does not reveal the Knowledge Challenge paper.
It helps the learner prepare honestly for the required content and skills.
Two Practice Rounds before the marks count
Learners receive two Practice Rounds before the formal Knowledge Challenge.
Practice Rounds are mock assessments.
They allow the learner to practise:
- Reading assessment instructions.
- Interpreting question language.
- Understanding mark allocations.
- Structuring answers.
- Showing calculation steps.
- Managing time.
- Using approved or recommended accommodations.
- Working in the intended assessment space.
- Using the Invigilator App where applicable.
- Uploading work correctly.
- Identifying what still needs to be revised.
- Managing the emotional experience of assessment.

Practice Rounds do not contribute to the learner’s formal mark.
They may be repeated. Their purpose is preparation, not perfection.
Why Practice Rounds support emotional preparation
Assessment anxiety is often increased by uncertainty.
The learner may worry about:
- What the paper will look like.
- Whether they will understand the instructions.
- How the technology works.
- How much time they have.
- Whether their accommodation will work.
- How to submit the assessment.
- What happens if they make a mistake.
Practice Rounds reduce avoidable uncertainty.
The learner has already experienced the process before the formal assessment.
- They know what the screen looks like.
- They have tested their device.
- They have practised the question style.
- They know how to upload.
- They have seen how marks are awarded.

This does not guarantee that the learner will feel no anxiety.
It aims to ensure that fewer difficulties are caused by preventable surprise.
The Invigilator App
From Grade 4 to Grade 12, NeuroMe uses the web version of the Invigilator App for internal Knowledge Challenges.
The App helps NeuroMe protect academic integrity and confirm that the learner completed the assessment under the required conditions.

The learner requires:
- A Mac or Windows laptop.
- Google Chrome.
- A working webcam.
- A working microphone.
- Stable internet.
- A smartphone with a camera where required for the process.
The App operates in the background while the learner completes the assessment.
This allows the learner to remain in a familiar home environment without requiring an unfamiliar person to sit physically beside them throughout the internal Knowledge Challenge.
How the Invigilator App is designed to support a calmer experience
Traditional invigilation can add social and sensory pressure.
A learner may become distracted by:
- An unfamiliar adult.
- Being watched continuously.
- Movement in the room.
- Unexpected sounds.
- Fear of asking for help.
- The feeling that someone is standing over them.
The Invigilator App helps reduce the need for an additional person to be physically present during NeuroMe’s internal assessments.
The integrity requirement remains.
The learner still completes the assessment independently.
The environment becomes less socially intrusive.
Once the learner understands that the App is running in the background, they may be able to focus more fully on the paper.
Practice Rounds are essential Invigilator App preparation
The Knowledge Challenge should not be the first time the learner uses the App.
During the Practice Round period, learners can practise:
- Logging into the correct account.
- Opening the assessment.
- Granting the required permissions.
- Testing the webcam and microphone.
- Understanding what the App expects.
- Working while the App runs in the background.
- Uploading written work.
- Checking that submission was successful.
- Resolving technical problems before the formal date.
Repeated exposure can help turn an unfamiliar process into a predictable routine.
Does the Invigilator App replace every invigilator?
No.
The App is used for applicable NeuroMe internal Knowledge Challenges.
It does not replace the official venue and invigilation arrangements required for final Grade 12 external NSC examinations.
It also does not govern the later Amended Senior Certificate examinations.
Those examinations follow the rules of the relevant external authority.
The parent’s role before the Knowledge Challenge
Before the assessment, the parent may:
- Review the timetable.
- Help the learner plan revision.
- Ensure the Practice Rounds are completed.
- Check the device.
- Test the webcam and microphone.
- Prepare a quiet assessment space.
- Confirm that the learner has the permitted materials.
- Help the learner understand the process.
- Ensure that an approved accommodation is ready.
- Support emotional regulation.
- Remove avoidable distractions.
- Check the submission process.
The parent’s preparation can reduce preventable stress without interfering with the learner’s answers.
The parent’s role during the Knowledge Challenge
From Grade 4, the learner must complete the Knowledge Challenge independently.
The parent may not:
- Remain in the assessment room unless a formally recognised role permits it.
- Explain a question.
- Suggest an answer.
- Correct the learner’s work.
- Read or scribe without the relevant accommodation.
- Complete part of the assessment.
- Use external resources or AI for the learner.
- Help the learner improve an answer before submission.
The result must reflect the learner’s own knowledge and skills.
This is essential for reliable reporting and future qualification readiness.
What about younger learners?
Younger learners naturally require more help with technology and routine.
The parent may assist with age appropriate setup and the process NeuroMe communicates for that grade.
The parent should still avoid supplying answers or completing the academic work for the learner.
The level of independence should increase gradually as the learner develops.
Assessment accommodations
Accommodations help a learner access the assessment.
They do not provide answers or lower the academic standard.
Possible accommodations may include:
- Extra time.
- A reader.
- A scribe.
- Typing.
- Rest breaks.
- A separate venue.
- A prompter.
- Enlarged print.
- Other specifically approved support.
Grades R to 9
Formal Knowledge Challenge accommodations should be supported by an educational psychologist’s recommendation and handled through the NeuroMe process.
Grades 10 to 12
Accommodations must be formally applied for and approved by SACAI before they may be used in FET assessments.
The learner may use only the accommodations listed in the written approval.
Open Scope
Open Scope allows extensive flexibility during ordinary lessons.
That lesson flexibility does not mean that a parent may provide answers during a Knowledge Challenge.
Where assessment support is required, the family should communicate with NeuroMe so that the conditions are clear and the result can remain reliable.
Accommodations must be practised
An accommodation is most helpful when the learner knows how to use it.
Practice Rounds allow the learner to rehearse:
- How to use extra time without rushing or becoming fatigued.
- When to take approved rest breaks.
- How to work with a reader.
- How to dictate clearly to a scribe.
- How to use approved typing.
- How to respond to a prompter correctly.
- How to submit work completed through an alternative method.
The formal Knowledge Challenge should not be the learner’s first experience of the accommodation.
Academic integrity without shame
Academic integrity means that the submitted work must reflect the learner’s own knowledge.
This protects:
- The reliability of the mark.
- The learner’s report.
- The validity of progression decisions.
- SACAI requirements in FET.
- The learner’s preparation for future examinations.
- The fairness of the process.
A learner who receives unauthorised assistance may appear academically ready when they are not.
This can place them under greater pressure later.
NeuroMe protects integrity because honest evidence helps families make better decisions in the learner’s best interests.
What happens when the Knowledge Challenge begins?
The exact process depends on the learner’s grade and pathway, but generally the learner will:
- Enter the correct assessment platform.
- Follow the communicated setup process.
- Open the Knowledge Challenge.
- Confirm the Invigilator App connection where applicable.
- Work independently.
- Use only permitted materials.
- Use only approved accommodations.
- Complete the required answers.
- Upload or submit the work.
- Check that submission was successful.
FET assessments may involve a PDF question paper and handwritten answers unless typing or another format has been formally approved.
What happens after submission?
After the assessment:
- The learner should confirm that the upload was successful.
- Submission evidence should be kept.
- The assessment is sent for marking.
- Marks and feedback are processed according to the applicable pathway.
- Results contribute to reporting where relevant.
- The learner and parent should review the returned work.
- Academic concerns should be addressed before the next assessment cycle.
Parents should not assume that pressing a button always means the full submission was received.
The confirmation process matters.
What if there is a technical problem?
Technical difficulties should be reported immediately through the correct NeuroMe support process via email with their Academic Lead.
The family should provide:
- The learner’s name.
- Grade and subject.
- The exact time.
- A description of the problem.
- Screenshots.
- A short video where useful.
- The device and browser used.
- Any error message.
- Evidence of attempted submission.
- The Invigilator App reference information where available.
Clear evidence helps NeuroMe investigate quickly and determine the correct next step.
Waiting until several days later may make the problem more difficult to verify.
What if the learner misses a Knowledge Challenge?
The answer depends on the pathway.
Open Scope
The learner has greater timing flexibility and may complete the released Knowledge Challenge at a suitable later time according to the Open Scope process.
Standard Grades R to 9
The learner should follow the issued timetable.
Any request for an adjustment should be communicated promptly to the Academic Lead and remains subject to the applicable process.
FET Standard NSC
SACAI timelines and formal assessment rules apply.
A missed assessment may result in zero unless the learner qualifies for an approved second opportunity and provides the required evidence.
Ordinary forgetfulness, lack of preparation or failure to monitor communication may not qualify.
What is a second opportunity?
A second opportunity is not an automatic rewrite because the learner was unhappy with the first attempt. This is applied for on the learner’s ionHub.
It is a formal opportunity that may be considered where a valid and documented circumstance prevented the learner from completing the original assessment correctly.
Examples may include:
- A properly documented medical emergency.
- A death in the immediate family.
- A verified serious technical problem.
- Another exceptional circumstance accepted under the applicable policy.
FET second opportunities remain subject to SACAI requirements.
Families should report the problem immediately and provide complete supporting evidence.
How are Knowledge Challenges marked?
Knowledge Challenges are marked according to:
- The memorandum.
- The rubric where applicable.
- The mark allocation.
- The CAPS standard.
- The learner’s submitted evidence.
- The applicable SACAI requirements in FET.
Markers can award only the marks supported by what the learner communicated.
A learner may understand more than they wrote, but the marker cannot award marks for information that is not visible in the response.
This is why Practice Rounds and memoranda are so valuable.
They teach the learner how to make their knowledge visible.
Can a Knowledge Challenge mark be questioned?
Yes.
Human marking can involve error or professional judgement.
A learner or parent may request clarity or raise a dispute through NeuroMe’s approved process.
A clear query should identify:
- The learner.
- Subject.
- Knowledge Challenge.
- Question number.
- Mark awarded.
- The reason for the concern.
- The submitted answer.
- Any supporting screenshot or evidence.
A dispute does not guarantee that a mark will change.
It ensures that the concern can be reviewed.
How Knowledge Challenges contribute to reports
Standard Grades R to 9
Lessons and Knowledge Challenges contribute to continuous assessment.
The learner’s report is therefore not determined only by one formal assessment.
Practice Rounds do not count towards the report.
Standard Grades 10 to 12
Assessment weighting follows SACAI and NSC requirements.
Different tasks, tests, practical activities and examinations may carry different formal weightings.
Open Scope
Knowledge Challenges provide important evidence of progress and understanding.
They support reliable Open Scope reporting, grade completion and progression decisions.
The timing may be flexible, but the academic evidence remains meaningful.
Amended Senior Certificate preparation
NeuroMe Knowledge Challenge results help the family evaluate preparation.
They do not form part of the official DBE Senior Certificate result.
The later external examination determines that result.
