NeuroMe is a neurodivergent focused online learning provider providing CAPS aligned learning. NeuroMe is committed to inclusive education; however, all accommodations must strictly adhere to assessment standards of CAPS in pursuit of the National Senior Certificate (NSC).
Accommodation confirmation: Grade R-9
- NeuroMe is not an online school and does not approve or deny any accommodations, we simply allow accommodations to be used when there has been confirmation of an Education Psychologist’s recommendation for specific accommodations. (The confirmation form is in the learner’s ionHub)
- Homeschooling learners registered with the DBE: If a learner is registered with the DBE we recommend that parents maintain a thorough paper trail with their PED (provincial education departments) of accommodations used in assessments aligned to their Education Psychologist’s recommendation. Although NeuroMe does not govern or manage this process of homeschooling registration or academic records communication to DBE, we make these suggestions in an effort to give our registered parents a heads-up of their requirements as the primary educator.
- Homeschooling learners that transition from mainstream schools with existing Accommodation Approval letters: These letters can be used interchangeably with the Educational Psychologist recommendation when submitting confirmation with NeuroMe of the accommodations for assessments.
- When confirmation forms are completed informing NeuroMe of the Educational Psychologist’s recommendation for accommodation, NeuroMe will issue a letter of Acknowledgement of Accommodations which can be attached to all Knowledge Challenges as confirmation of accommodation recommended by the learner’s Educational Psychologist.
Assessment invigilation Grade 3-9: Invigilation App
- In grades 3 to 9, Knowledge Challenges (done in terms 2 and 4) are complete under formal invigilation via the Invigilation App on a laptop, where the learner’s screen, camera and mic is monitored to ensure assessment integrity is maintained.
- Integrity flags on the Invigilator App: The Invigilator App is extremely accurate and when a learner’s behaviour during the assessment is flagged as irregular i.e. additional face in the camera shot, or additional tabs open other than the assessment, etc., then the Invigilator App will flag the irregularity to NeuroMe who will manually view all data and pass or fail the learner’s integrity status for that assessment. There is therefore no need to worry about the cat meowing- we check everything manually.
- Extra time: If NeuroMe issues a letter of Acknowledgement of Accommodation for additional time, the extra time is automatically added to your learner’s time in the Invigilator App.
Reader/Scribe or Prompter Accommodations Grade 3-9
- In grades 3 to 9, Knowledge Challenges (done in terms 2 and 4) are complete under formal invigilation via the Invigilation App, when a learner uses a Reader/scribe or prompter, that individual needs to be in the camera view of the Invigilator App along with the learner to monitor their interaction.
- If a learner confirms in the ionHub that the Education Psychologist has recommended the accommodation for a reader/scribe or prompter the individual who will act as the reader/scribe or prompter for the learner (who may not be their tutor or family member) needs to be trained through NeuroMe, the DBE, SACAI or IEB to be a reader/scribe or prompter- this training certificate can not be older than 3 years.
- The Reader/Scribe or Prompter needs to sign an Assessment declaration and attach it to every Knowledge Challenges of the learner.
- The sourcing and employment of the reader/scribe or prompter is solely the responsibility of the parent and NeuroMe does not have any involvement in this process.
Accommodation Application: Grade 10-12
Accommodations in the FET Phase (grade 10-12) can only be used with formal approval from SACAI. All accommodation applications must be supported by a recent (not older than 2 years) educational psychologist’s recommendation. Securing Educational Psychologist’s recommendations in earlier grades provides the historical evidence required for FET (grades 10–12) accommodation applications for FET to proceed smoothly.
Please take a moment to read and become familiar with the Accommodation Policy as the grades 10 to 12 accommodations differ from grades R to 9.
Assessment invigilation Grade 10-12: Invigilation App
- In grades 10 to 12, Knowledge Challenges (done in every term) are complete under formal invigilation via the Invigilation App on a laptop, where the learner’s screen, camera and mic is monitored to ensure assessment integrity is maintained and their written assessments and tasks are uploaded onto the Invigilator App using their mobile phones. The only assessments that differ is the final matric exams which are written in a SACAI venue under in-person invigilation.
- Integrity flags on the Invigilator App: The Invigilator App is extremely accurate and when their is behaviour during the assessment that is flagged as irregular i.e. additional face in the camera shot, or additional tabs open other than the assessment, etc. then the Invigilator App will flag the irregularity to NeuroMe who will manually view all data and pass or fail the learner’s integrity for that assessment. There is therefore no need to worry about the cat meowing- we check everything manually.
- Extra time: If SACAI issues a letter of Approval of Accommodation for additional time, the extra time are automatically added to your learner’s time in the Invigilator App.
Reader/Scribe or Prompter Accommodations Grade 10-12
- In grades 10 to 12, Knowledge Challenges (done in all 4 terms) are complete under formal invigilation via the Invigilation App, when a learner uses a Reader/scribe or prompter, that individual needs to be in the camera view of the Invigilator App along with the learner to monitor their interaction.
- If a learner has a SACAI Approval for an accommodation for a reader/scribe or prompter the individual who will act as the reader/scribe or prompter for the learner (who may not be their tutor or family member) needs to be trained through the DBE, SACAI or IEB and verified by NeuroMe to be a reader/scribe or prompter- this training certificate can not be older than 3 years and needs to be attached to every assessment of the learner.
Please note: The parents will also need to carry the cost in the final matric exams for the reader/scribe or prompter, as well as the renting of a separate venue at the SACAI exam centre for every final exam that the learner has to write.
